take one look at Y.I. Yang and you will see the perfect example of competition in today’s golf world. any given week could present a new major champion.
i wasn’t alive in Jack’s day, but i wonder if this was as true as it is today. did he have a huge pool of people challenging him at every turn. or were there say 20 or 30 guys that would be in the mix every week?
i believe this is one reason tiger will, and should, go down as the best ever. when he gets to 20 or 22 major championships, with the competition he faced every week, it will be an enormous feat.
name another sport where a 65 year old man can still compete at a championship level? could kareem come back and win the starting spot from shaq? pete sampras watched federer break his record and isnt even twice his age. all around the younger, faster, sexier people are winning… most of the time.
enter golf. this week is the british open and it is being played on a style course that helped give birth to the game. the stories this weekend will be captivating. and while someone under 35 will probably win, today was for a 65 year old. tom watson won this tournament about 30 years ago and he just might win it again.
if you havent ever given golf a try, you should. it is rich with history and a beautiful game.
so heres the deal… i really like football. i can watch the nfl all day long… and love it! it is fast paced, action packed and there are so many facets to the game. also, the nfl has incredible parity, which is what makes it so much better than the NCAA/SEC. (example…. College – the last three college champs are florida, lsu, florida. NFL – last year: the arizona cardinals made it to the super bowl!)
enter hockey. seriously exciting, fast paced, action PACKED! and the wings fans are contagious around here. so, last friday night, i watched my first ever hockey game and loved it! basically its holding your breath for 20 minute intervals. crazy good. now, i realize that it was stanley cup hockey… but still, it was amazing. (and apparently hockey players like wine!)
who knows, maybe next year i will watch a few more games.
so, here are the highlights from my first hockey game, which was a heartbreaker. i hear the wings didn’t act like themselves… and it makes sense.
(also, a few shout outs to my hockey friends that i should have listened to a long time ago… tom polker, mike edwards, noah whyte, luke shortridge, landon myers. – you were right!!!)
